Skaggs' free throw lifts Mustangs over Green Devils
DODSONVILLE – A converted free-throw with .4 seconds by Lynchburg-Clay’s Aaron Skaggs came at a heavy price for the North Adams Green Devils Tuesday night, as the one point was the difference in the Southern Hills League game, with the Mustangs defeating NA 53-53 at Lynchburg-Clay High School.
The Mustangs prevailed despite 13 missed layups, a 3 of 14 shooting performance from the 3-point line, while shooting 10 of 22 from the free-throw line.
Jorden DeHaas led the Mustangs in scoring with 14 points as all his points came in the second half. DeHaas was followed by Dylan Noll with 12 points in the win.
Austin Fawley finished with 10 points and Steven Collins ended up with eight.
“We had had a 14-point lead with four minutes to go and North Adams came back to tie it with 8 seconds remaining,” Lynchburg-Clay head coach Jason McLaughlin said. “We got a three point shot off, followed by an offensive rebound by (Aaron) Skaggs in which he got fouled. (Aaron) Skaggs also had an outstanding defensive game, holding their season top scorer to two points.
“Our defense in the first and third quarters was outstanding, but our inability to hit open shots hurt us. We will have to improve our shooting if we expect to win many close games.”
The Mustangs will play West Union on Friday.
