Mustangs send Astros into orbit

DODSONVILLE — The Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs sent the East Clinton Astros into orbit Tuesday evening with a 13-run, 11-hit first inning. Though East Clinton battled back, they never held the lead, as the Mustangs gained a 15-12 non-league win at Lynchburg-Clay High School.
The runs kept coming in the first for the Mustangs. Dalton Cox, Austin Fawley, Cody Roush, Ray Doss and Ryan Doss all scored two runs apiece in the inning. Also scoring runs were Dallas Puckett, Brad Barger and Darren Harp.
In the first Cox had a double, as did Wes Pierson. Ryan Doss hit a three RBI triple and Ray Doss gained three total RBIs in the same inning for the Mustangs.
"The first inning was as good of a hitting display as I've seen in 15 years coaching," LC head coach Aric Fiscus said. "We got all the kids on the field and everyone on the roster was involved with this win."
In the second inning Kyle Yocum hit a two-run single to score Jake Back and Dakota Dye.
The win on the mound was credited to Pierson. In his first varsity appearance on the hill he struck out one batter. Aaron Skaggs gained two strikeouts for LC.
At the plate Ray Doss was 3-for-4 and Ryan Doss was 2-for-2. Pierson and Cox finished with two hits each.
LC finished the game with 17 hits and no errors.
The Astros gained three runs in each of the second and third innings. In the fourth they scored six runs.
The win lifts LC to 12-2 overall, with a Southern Hills League record of 8-0.
LC will face Ripley Wednesday at RHS. If LC wins, they will clinch no less than a share of the SHL title as they hold a four-game lead in first place.
