Lady Tigers pull away from Blue Lions in 2nd half for SCOL victory

WASHINGTON C.H. — On Monday night at Washington Senior High School, the McClain Lady Tigers shot their way to another South Central Ohio League win. Shooting 79-percent from the field, MHS, behind three players who scored in double figures, defeated the Washington Lady Blue Lions 54-35 for the season sweep.
Leading MHS was Chrissy Cobb with a game-high 18 points, behind three 3-pointers, three two-point baskets and a 3-of-3 effort from the free-throw line. Cobb tallied 11 points at halftime. Cobb added eight assists, five steals and two rebounds.
Also scoring in double figures for the Lady Tigers were Jenna Perie and Kate Crabtree. Perie had a balanced night all around with 11 points, five steals, four rebounds and four assists. Crabtree added five rebounds.
On Monday when MHS shot 79 percent (22-of-29), the Lady Blue Lions shot 30 percent (12-of-40). Another big turning point was the turnover department, with Washington committing 20 and MHS with 11.
"Having three in double figures helps us out tremendously," MHS head coach Dennis Overstake said. "When you can spread out the scoring like that, it makes it hard for a defense to key on us."
MHS won earlier this season against Washington, 35-19.
Though MHS won by 19 points, the first quarter was played close with MHS leading 16-13 after the first eight minutes.
Washington began the first quarter, on the night they honored their seniors, with five straight points, including a 3-pointer from senior Lauren Knisley.
Crabtree put MHS on the board at the 4:33 mark of the first, which was the start of a 6-0 run by the Lady Tigers as Crabtree scored her fourth point of the quarter and two point from Frankie Wise gave MHS a 6-5 lead with 3:24 left in the first.
The Lady Blue Lions (4-6, 9-9) regained the lead with a 3-pointer from Maggie McDonald. But the Lady Tigers equaled the feat with a trey from Cobb to put MHS up 9-8. Cobb sank another 3-pointer with .54 seconds left in the quarter to put MHS ahead by three points at 14-11, breaking a tie of 11.
"Washington came out shooting well in the first quarter," Overstake said. "I thought the key of the first half was getting a 10-point lead. We needed a double-digit lead, and that helped us do what we needed to do on both sides of the ball."
MHS pulled away in the second quarter, starting with a 9-0 run for a lead of 25-13 with 4:29 left in the first half. Scoring in the run were Perie, Brittany Mullikin, Megan Hogle and Cobb, who sank her third 3-pointer.
The Lady Blue Lions were held to four points in the second frame, trailing 28-17 at halftime.
Once the third quarter was completed, MHS led 37-29, as Washington won the third frame 12-9.
MHS (7-2, 11-4) was first to score with a 3-pointer from Wise, but the Lady Blue Lions came back with eight straight points, including two three-point plays from Knisley, cutting the Lady Tigers' lead to six points (31-25) with 4:55 left in the quarter. Knisley led Washington with 13 points. Jessica Guyette finished with 10 points.
"I thought our kids limited their touches (Guyette and Knisley)," Overstake said. "Washington knew who they wanted to get the ball to, and we talked about who we needed to stop."
After Taylor Faulconer made two points and Crabtree followed with a jumper, Washington outscored MHS 3-2 with another three-point play, this time by Molli Shaw.
In the fourth, Wise began the quarter like she did the previous one, with a 3-pointer to put MHS up 40-29. Wise finished with eight points.
Cobb and Perie followed with points for MHS. Perie scored six straight McClain points, with MHS leading 47-31 at the midway point of the final frame.
Crabtree made a put-back bucket, and Cobb scored the final four MHS points with back-to-back transition baskets. On her final basket she was fouled, completing a three-point play with a converted free-throw.
"One problem was we weren't finishing, and play got sloppy in the third quarter," Overstake said. "They pushed the ball and cut our lead to seven, and it seemed like it took forever for us to regain the 10-point lead. I also thought Chrissy and Jenna distributed the ball very well."
Washington led with 19 rebounds, and MHS grabbed 18.
The win lifts MHS to 7-2 in the SCOL and 11-4 overall.
In JV play Monday, Washington defeated MHS, 41-21. Tara Karnes led MHS with 13 points. Felicity Peabody scored four points, and McKenzie Figgins and Makenzie Olaker each scored two points for MHS. Tori Merritt and Paige McRoberts led Washington with eight points each.
The Lady Tigers are scheduled to play again on Thursday when they host first-place Miami Trace, with JV starting at 6 p.m.
Overstake talked about the upcoming SCOL showdown.
"They (MT) won't change anything because they have been so successful with what Coach (James) Stutzman teaches his team," he said. "The kids have been through the program, and they know what to expect. They will come with their best effort, and last time the game came down to the last possession."
