Lady Mustangs put three runs on the board, fall to Eastern Pike

     DODSONVILLE - Three runs in the seventh inning put a positive spin on things for the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs Friday afternoon. Though they did put runs on the board in the final inning, they came up just short as they lost their second game of the season, falling to Eastern Pike 8-3.
    Eastern Pike put runs on the board in the first, third, fourth and sixth innings.
    "I am really impressed with our attitude, effort and performance today," LC head coach Meredith Krisch said. "We competed, and that was nice to see."
    The inning started with Rebekah Ramsey singling to lead off the inning. Sara Martin followed with a base hit of her own.
    With two runners on, Christine Easterling scored Ramsey on a base hit to gain the RBI.
    Later in the two-out seventh, the rally continued with Carissa Truman gaining a two-run single to the outfield to score both Martin and Easterling.
    "This is a good sign for the rest of the season," Krisch said. "The girls are confident in their abilities and this a new team this year. We are really excited for the rest of the season."
    The first LC hit came in the bottom of the fourth with a single from Jessica Davidson.
    In the sixth, Davidson and Emily Myers reached base with Davidson gaining a double.
    For Eastern Pike, they built their lead with two runs in the first by Tackett and Staker touching home plate. Tackett reached with a single with one out in the inning.
    In the third, Eastern Pike's Pack, Thornsberry, Staker and Anna Mills all scored runs for a 6-0 lead.
    Tackett scored one in the fourth and Pack plated a run in the sixth for an 8-0 lead. Pack led off the sixth with a single.
    The loss was charged to Courtney Covert. Covert pitched well from the circle as she had three strikeouts in seven innings.
    "Courtney did a great job pitching," Kirsch said. "She is able to pitch the entire game and has matured this season."
    The loss drops LC to 0-2 overall as they fell in their season opener 22-2 Thursday against the Ripley Lady Blue Jays.
