Double take: Hertlein, Lewis gain double-double's in SHL win over Ripley

DODSONVILLE — The Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs and Ripley Lady Blue Jays took part in another Southern Hills League battle Thursday night. This time, at LCHS, the Lady Mustangs took charge, defending their home court, 56-38 for the regular season sweep over RHS.
Earlier this season (Jan. 22), the Lady Mustangs defeated RHS, 39-28 in a makeup game (from Dec. 13) at Ripley.
On Thursday night, LC, who have now won three straight games, had two players finish not only with 10-plus points, but 10 or more rebounds for double-double's.
Laney Lewis, a sophomore, led LC with a game-high 19 points, going 7-of-10 from the field and 5-of-6 from the free-throw line. Lewis added 13 rebounds for her double-double, along with two blocked shots, two steals and one assist.
LC junior Brooke Hertlein also had a double-double with 16 points (7-of-15 from the field) and 10 rebounds. Hertlein also had three blocked shots, three assists and two steals.
But the duo of double-double's was just the start for LC as they had four more players who added points to the scoreboard.
Seniors Meredith Fittro, Lillian Blankenship and Hannah Blankenship produced for LC.
Fittro finished with nine points (2-of-4 from the free-throw line), along with five assists and three rebounds.
Fellow seniors Hannah Blankenship and Lillian Blankenship scored four and two points, respectively. Hannah Blankenship tallied five rebounds, two steals and one assist. Lillian Blankenship finished with three assists, one rebound and one steal.
Sophomore Emma Setty scored six points, shooting a perfect 3-of-3 from the field, with one assist and one steal added to her overall totals.
Junior Karen Hilt had one rebound.
LC led 14-5 after the first quarter, then added 13 points in the second frame for a halftime lead of 28-7, as they held RHS to two points in the quarter.
In the third frame, LC outscored RHS 15-13 and in the final quarter, RHS won it, 18-14.
The win gives LC a 11-6 overall record and a 6-5 mark in the SHL.
