The Washington Lady Blue Lions kept the undefeated streak against teams from Highland County in tact Saturday, as they defeated the Fairfield Lady Lions 58-28 at Grandle Gymnasium.

The Fairfield Lions took the lead in the first quarter and never looked back as they gained their fourth Southern Hills League win Friday night, defeating the Fayetteville Rockets 60-45.

The Fairfield Lady Lions dropped a Southern Hills League game Thursday evening to the Ripley Lady Blue Jays 70-34 at Ripley High School.

In July 1968, Washington Court House City Schools announced that a new basketball coach had been employed; 24-year-old Gary Shaffer, of Wellsburg, W.Va., replaced Jim Wilson, who retired. Shaffer had played three years of varsity basketball at West Virginia University and had coached one year at Easton, Md., where his team won the class B state championship, with a 23- 0 record. He was married and had a 14 month-old son.

With five high schools in the county, I often wonder about each school’s nickname and think about how they got the nickname. In Highland County we have the Indians, Mustangs, Tigers, Lions and Wildcats. Highland County has a nice mixture of cats, horses and a celebrated group of people.

After winning in convincing fashion earlier in the week the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs dropped their second Southern Hills League game of the season Thursday night, as they were defeated by the North Adams Lady Green Devils 53-42.
