Wildcats fall by 7 to visiting Fayetteville

In a game played on Friday, Jan. 30, the Whiteoak Wildcats boys basketball team lost to the visiting Fayetteville Rockets 49-42 in a battle between two teams from the Southern Hills Athletic Conference. 

The contest between the two Division II SHAC squads began with a defensive battle in the first frame as the score was 7-6 in favor of Fayetteville after eight minutes of in-game action. Next was a second quarter that saw the Rockets win the frame at 14-8 for a halftime advantage of seven points at 21-14. 

In the third quarter, the Rockets outscored the host Wildcats 16-9, and in the fourth and final frame it was Whiteoak winning the eight-minute battle at 19-12. 

Whiteoak’s leading scorer was Brady Brandenburg with 12 points with five two-point field goals, and he went 2-of-5 from the free-throw line. Brandenburg also collected three rebounds, two assists and two steals. 

Evan Richmond totaled nine points for Whiteoak as he sank two 3-pointers, one two-point bucket and he was 1-of-2 from the free-throw line. Richmond added four rebounds to his overall totals. 

Also with nine points was Christopher Wessner, as he also made two 3-pointers, along with a two-point basket, and he was 1-of-2 from the free-throw line. Wessner also collected six rebounds, three assists and three steals. 

Sawyer Blair totaled eight points with a 3-pointer, two two-point baskets, and like two of his teammates, he finished 1-of-2 from the free-throw line. Blair also collected six rebounds, two assists, three steals and two blocks. 

Lucas Pollard finished with two points, seven rebounds, two assists and a steal. Jason Gaskins ended the game with two points and three rebounds. 

As a team, the Wildcats totaled 11 two-pointers, five 3-pointers (Wessner 2, Richmond 2, Blair 1), and they were 5-of-11 from the free-throw line. The Wildcats also finished with team totals that included 31 rebounds (11 offensive), 10 assists, 10 steals and two blocks, while having 12 turnovers. 

Fayetteville was led in scoring by Keaton Strong with 13 points, as he made a 3-pointer, three two-point baskets and was 4-of-6 in his free-throw attempts. Brody Feldhaus had a double-double for the Rockets with 12 points and 19 rebounds. 

Also scoring in double figures was Charlie Coffman with 10 points for FHS, and teammates Jack South and Korbin Strong each scored seven points. 
The Rockets totaled 13 two-point baskets, three 3-pointers (Feldhaus, South, Keaton Strong) and were 14-of-20 from the free-throw line. They also had 28 rebounds (seven offensive), 10 assists, four steals and two blocks. 

The loss moves Whiteoak’s record to 6-10 overall and 2-8 in the SHAC Div, II standings. Fayetteville improves to 14-3 with the win and 10-1 in the SHAC Div. II standings.
