Basketball Report: Fairfield Lions top Whiteoak Wildcats in rivalry game; Hillsboro Indians fall to MT Panthers

Fairfield Lions win at home on Hall of Fame night over Whiteoak

Friday night the Fairfield Lions celebrated past greats with their Hall of Fame night, then they had a hall-worthy effort on the court by defeating the Whiteoak Wildcats 65-41 for the Southern Hills Athletic Conference win. 

The Lions defeated their Highland County rival Whiteoak (5-8, 8-12) for the second time this season by leading after each quarter, starting with a first quarter where they led 17-2 after eight minutes.

From there, the Lions outscored the Wildcats 16-14 in the second, 17-11 in the third, and 15-14 in the fourth quarter. 

At halftime Fairfield led Whiteoak 33-16. 

Fairfield (10-2, 13-6) was led by Brody Smith with 24 points as he made four two-point baskets, five 3-pointers, and he was 1-of-2 from the free-throw line. Smith’s scoring included eight points in the first, three points in the second, six points in the third, and seven points in the fourth quarter. 

Griffin Friend finished with 15 points for the Lions, making three two-pointers and three 3-pointers as Friend scored 12 of his points in the first half. 

Logan McIntosh totaled 10 points for the game off five two-point baskets, making at least one shot in each of the four quarters played. 

Caleb Barrera totaled six points, and the rest of Fairfield’s scoring included six points from Quentin McIntosh, and Caleb Rice finished with four points in the win. 

Team totals for the Lions included 18 two-point baskets, eight 3-pointers, and they were 5-of-7 from the free-throw line. 

Whiteoak’s leading scorer was Zander Roades with 17 points, finishing the game with five two-point baskets, one 3-pointer, and he was 4-of-4 from the free-throw line. 

Whiteoak also had the following final scoring totals: Sawyer Blair (6), Conner Dickey (3), Brady Brandenburg (8) and Jonah Michael (7). 

The Wildcats totaled 12 two-pointers, four 3-pointers, and they went 5-of-10 from the free-throw line. 

The win improves Fairfield’s overall record to 13-6, and their SHAC Division II record moves to 10-2, as they’ve clinched the SHAC Division II championship with one conference game remaining next Friday night (Feb. 14) vs. Manchester. FHS also has two non-conference games remaining, those being on Saturday, Feb. 8 vs. Hillsboro and Tuesday, Feb. 11 at Cedarville. 

WHS now stands at 8-12 overall and they’ve finished their SHAC Division II season at 5-8. 

WHS has one regular season non-conference game left against Clermont Northeastern on Tuesday, Feb. 11 at home.

Indians lose at home to Panthers 

The Hillsboro Indians lost their Frontier Athletic Conference home game on Friday night to the undefeated Miami Trace Panthers, 60-45. 

The Indians are without their second-leading scorer and team captain, Tate Davis, who is currently injured. 

In Friday’s loss — which was also Hall of Fame night for Hillsboro as they honored past great athletes — the Indians trailed 15-7 after the first quarter, and after a 12-7 second quarter in favor of Miami Trace, the Indians trailed at halftime by a 27-14 score. 

Hillsboro (2-6, 8-10) lost the third frame at 18-11 for a 45-25 score after three quarters with Miami Trace in front. In the fourth quarter the Indians scored 20 points, winning the frame as MTHS scored 15 points in the final frame. 

Jack Howland led the Indians with 17 points, finishing the game with four two-pointers, two 3-pointers, and he was 3-of-5 from the free-throw line. 

Mason Dumpert totaled 10 points for HHS with four two-point baskets (two in the first and two in the fourth quarters), plus he was 2-of-2 from the free-throw line. 

Tre Captain finished with seven points, making two two-point buckets and one 3-pointer. 

The Indians also had three points each from Brayden Hunter, Daniel Moreda and Brady Juillerat. HHS also had two points from Dylan Dixon. 

Hillsboro’s team totals included 12 two-point baskets, five 3-pointers and they were 6-of-7 from the free-throw line. 

For the FAC first-place Panthers, Trey Robinette totaled 14 points, and Skye Salyers finished with 12 points. Miami Trace (8-0,18-0) also had 10 points from Adam Guthrie and eight points from Gage Bowers.

The rest of Miami Trace’s scoring included Conner Napier (2), Luke Armstrong (3), Julian Baker (4) and Cade Whitaker (7). 

As a team, the Panthers totaled 19 two-point baskets, seven 3-pointers, and they were 1-of-3 from the free-throw line. 

Miami Trace stays undefeated overall at 18-0, with a FAC first-place record of 8-0. Hillsboro now stands at 8-10 overall and 2-6 in the FAC.
