George Spickard was born 1757 in Virginia. He enlisted in Capt. Richard Campbell’s Co. 8th Virginia Regiment in 1776.

He served until Feb. 9, 1781 and was discharged at Valley Forge. He was in the battles of Brandywine and Germantown.

About 1814, he emigrated from Virginia and settled on a farm seven miles west of Hillsboro, where he lived the remainder of his life.

On Nov. 10, 1819, he applied for a pension and it was granted. It was renewed in 1832 following the 1832 Act of Congress. At the time of his death in 1848, he was receiving $80 a year. Spickard is buried on his farm. The grave is marked by a white marble stone.

In June 1848, his son, Alexander, made the oath that his father was deceased and named all the children. Be it remembered that Alexander Spickard of said county personally appeared before me, William Keys, a magistrate in and for said county duly authorized to administer oaths and made oath: that his father, George Spickard, deceased, who was a Revolutionary War pensioner of the United States, departed this life on the 15th day of February 1848, leaving no widow, but left the following children heirs of his estate - viz - Thomas Spickard, Elizabeth Barrow, William Spickard, Polly Hulse, Nancy Roush, George Spickard, Jane Dawson, Alexander Spickard and Matilda Spickard, widow of John Spickard, deceased. – Alexander (his mark) Spickard.

Sworn to and subscribed before me this 23rd day of June A.D. 1848, William Keys, justice of peace.

The above affidavit of Alexander Spickard is recorded in Order Book No. 9, 1845-1849, page 477, June 23, 1848.The NSDAR database shows that a number of the children moved west to Indiana and Missouri. On May 25, 1815, Wm. Fulton of Ross County sold 90 acres to George Spickard (Transcribed Deed Book 1 Rec. of the Recorder’s Office of Highland County, Ohio 1805-1850, Page 1).

There are descendants of Alexander living today in Highland County. Descendants are eligible not only for NSDAR membership, but also First Families of Highland County. Source: NSDAR database.
