Hillsboro Woman’s Club celebrating 100th anniversary with Dec. 3 tea

The Hillsboro Woman’s Club will celebrate their 100th anniversary with a tea Sunday, Dec. 3 from 1-3 p.m. at the Highland House Museum.

Members of the community, especially other area women’s clubs, are welcome to attend the tea to help the club celebrate. The event will also serve as the club’s December meeting.

The Hillsboro Woman’s Club was organized April 12, 1923. Seventeen ladies met at the home of Mrs. Anita Harsha for the purpose of organizing the club. They elected the following officers: president, Mrs. Anita Harsha; vice president, Mrs. Ethel Cook; recording secretary, Miss Marie McMullen; corresponding secretary, Mrs. Bernice McVey; and treasurer, Mrs. Laura Clark.

In early years, the club met in the members’ homes. Programs usually featured either a guest speaker or a paper that one of the club members had prepared on a topic. Their goal was to continue and expand members’ education through these programs, and that continues with the club to this day.

A century later, the Hillsboro Woman’s Club continues to meet with 21 active members and seven associate members. Current officers are Virginia Purdy, president; Rosemary Ryan, secretary; and Betty Ann Walker, treasurer.

The club continues to feature interesting programs every month, and new members are always welcome.
