Hillsboro Library hosting cookie contest; new Cookbook Club set to start in May
The Hillsboro Library is feeling super sweet next month with its first-ever cookie contest.
We are so excited to invite patrons to come show off their baking skills. We also want to give a big, big thank-you to our judges: ButterMilks Bakery, Crooked Cutter Cookiery and Tami Takes the Cake.
Patrons can sign up for the contest at the front desk; all contestants must be registered by Wednesday, May 15.
The contest will be Thursday, May 23 from 5-7 p.m. Winners will be announced at 6:30 p.m.
Judges will name first-, second- and third-place winners. Additionally, patrons are invited to come taste the cookies as well and vote for a “People’s Choice” cookie. All winners will receive a cookie-themed prize.
We’ve never hosted a contest like this before. It will be so much fun to have so many home bakers showing off their best recipes. We had the idea for this contest when we were trying to think of ways to help get the word out about a new club we’re starting in May, the Cookbook Club.
The new club will meet once a month. For each meeting, members will all use the same cookbook and create a different recipe from it. It’s basically like a fun, monthly potluck where patrons can do a deep-dive into one of the cookbooks we have on our shelves.
Future meetings could also see patrons reading novels that also include recipes. Joanne Fluke’s cozy mysteries, for instance, always have tasty recipes in them.
The goal is to give people a time and place where they can share some camaraderie, some good food, and perhaps some good books as well.
The first meeting of the Cookbook Club is Thursday, May 30 at 5:30 p.m. The club is geared more toward adults. During the first meeting, members will be trying out Ree Drummond’s “The Pioneer Woman Cooks: Come and Get It!” Copies will be available at the front desk. Sign-up is not necessary.
