Classic movie nights at Hillsboro Library
The Hillsboro Library is fighting the mid-winter “blahs” by introducing a new monthly program to its roster: classic movie nights.
“We are really excited to offer these to the community,” said circulation manager Sarah Davidson. “There are a lot of really great, older movies out there that are fun to either revisit, or, if you’ve never seen them before, to experience for the first time.”
Davidson described the movie nights as being like “little parties.”
“We’ll play the movie and have snacks, of course,” Davidson said, adding that “you can’t watch a movie without good snacks. But in addition, we’ll also have a craft that is themed with the movie,” she said.
Also, each movie will have a “fact sheet” for patrons to peruse and learn more about the film as they watch it.
The library’s first movie is “The Road to Bali,” starring Bob Hope and Bing Crosby, set for March 12 at 5 p.m.
“I remember loving this movie when I was a kid,” Davidson said. “I thought it would be a perfect movie to kick off this program. March can be such a long, dreary month, so I figured, ‘What’s better than a comedy that takes place somewhere warm and tropical?’”
The craft for the evening is paper tropical flowers.
Other movies planned include:
April 16: “Plan 9 from Outer Space” (1959)
May 14: “Rock, Rock, Rock!” (1956)
June 11: “Cyrano de Bergerac” (1950)
July 16: “Santa Claus Conquers the Martians” (1964)
Aug. 6: “Charlie Chaplin’s The Kid” (1921)
Sept. 17: “Phantom Planet” (1961)
Oct. 16: “Night of the Living Dead” (1968)
Nov. 12: “Phantom of the Opera” (1925)
Dec. 10: “Scrooge” (1935).
All movies start at 5 p.m., with some of the nights being special themed-parties.
“In April, when we watch ‘Plan 9 from Outer Space,’ we’re going to have a ‘So Bad It’s Good?’ party,” explained Davidson. “‘Plan 9’ is supposedly one the worst movies ever made, so we’re going to embrace that idea and make some ‘bad art’ while we watch it.”
In July, the movie night will also be a “Christmas in July” party. “We’ll cheer for Santa Claus as he conquers the Martians,” Davison said, “while we make alien-themed ornaments and munch on Christmas cookies.”
Then, in December, the library will have a proper Christmas party, again with cookies, as patrons watch the classic “Scrooge” and make paperback Christmas trees.
“We’re really excited for these movie nights,” Davidson said. “We think it will be a lot of fun, giving people the chance to watch these classic films while also getting crafty and creative.”
