Wintry precipitation mix hits southern Ohio

Although precipitation has diminished in most of the area, crews from the Ohio Department of Transportation - District 9 continue their efforts this morning to treat the state highway system for snow and ice.

Currently, crews from Adams, Brown, Pike, Ross and Scioto counties are reporting most routes to be icy, while crews in Highland, Jackson and Lawrence counties are reporting roadways to be clear and mostly wet. However, clear and wet pavement is also slick pavement, and with temperatures hovering near freezing, ice can form quickly and without warning. In addition, periods of light rain and freezing rain are still pushing through some parts of the district, so ice continues to be a threat.
 
While ODOT crews will remain on the state highways throughout the morning to patrol and treat as needed, motorists are reminded of the continued need for additional caution. 

Routes that appear to be clear are likely to be slick, and bridges and overpasses are especially prone to ice conditions as they have colder surface temperatures. Drivers should reduce their speed, allow additional travel time, and maintain a safe following distance behind other drivers, especially snowplow operators.
