The mercury may have hovered near 100 degrees Wednesday, but the children of Greenfield took no notice as the city of Greenfield, Highland County Community Action,  Paint Creek Joint Fire and Ambulance District and the Greenfield water department pitched in to bring them a cool way to cope with the August heat.

The city held its first water day at the corner of Jefferson Street and Fifth Street near the campus of the Greenfield Exempted Village Schools.

Greenfield City Manager Betty Bishop said the event was a tremendous success , with more than 100 children participating in spraying water from fire trucks and running through makeshift fountains created through fire hoses.

Community Action provided lunch for the children, and music was provided by Pokey’s DJ and Karaoke.

Bishop said the event has been so successful they are already planning to do it next summer.
