Wenstrup wins Second Congressional District seat

In the Second Congressional District, Republican Brad Wenstrup defeated Pike County Democrat William Smith, with 92 percent of the votes counted, 173,219 to 122,621.
In Highland County, Wenstrup defeated Smith 10,885 to 5,438.
Wenstrup defeated Republican incumbent Jean Schmidt in the March primary race for Ohio's 2nd Congressional District. Republicans Fred Kundrata and Tony Brush also were in the 2012 GOP primary.

Smith defeated David Krikorian in the Democratic primary.
Wenstrup is a lieutenant colonel with the U.S. Army Reserve, serving in the Medical Service Corps.
In 2005, Wenstrup deployed for a year of active duty in Iraq where he served as a combat surgeon with the 344th Combat Support Hospital. For his service and actions in Iraq, Wenstrup was awarded the Bronze Star and Combat Action Badge.

"We are facing serious issues, and I vow to work tirelessly on your behalf in Washington. Mounting debt, burdensome regulations, and bureaucratic overreach threaten the central freedoms that are the foundation of the country. I can't do this alone, and I need your help.
"Together, we will let the nation know that the Second District is open for business. We have the people, the resources, and the energy to get this region, this state, and this country back to work. Over the last year, I have met with many concerned citizens and community leaders throughout southern Ohio. I look forward to meeting many more, and to be your ambassador & voice in Washington."
