Voters may declare party affiliation prior to voting in primary election

The Highland County Press has had a number of readers with questions concerning the May 6 Republican primary election.

Specifically, readers have asked about changing their political party affiliation in order to vote in the Republican primary in the race for Highland County sheriff.

According to the Highland County Board of Elections, a registered voter of any party may switch party affiliation and vote for his or her candidate of choice in the Republican primary race for sheriff (or any other contested primary).

Should a registered Democrat wish to vote in the Republican primary, he or she simply would need to request a Republican ballot on May 6 and sign a party change form.

According to the Ohio Secretary of State's office, "Under Ohio election law, you declare your political party affiliation by requesting the ballot of a political party in a partisan primary election.

"If you do not desire to affiliate with a political party in Ohio, you are considered to be an unaffiliated voter. An unaffiliated voter does not vote the ballot of a political party in a primary election. However, an unaffiliated voter may vote the Official Questions & Issues Ballot, if there is one for the voter's precinct at the election."

The deadline for an Independent to file for Highland County sheriff is May 5.

The Republican primary is Tuesday, May 6.
