Turner pleased with Department of Defense decision to allow furloughed civilian employees back to work

Congressman Mike Turner (OH-10), Chairman of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Air and Land Tactical, has released the following statement following the Department of Defense decision to allow many of the furloughed civilian employees to return to work:

"The president should not have furloughed these hard-working men and women. According to the bill he signed, they should have been allowed to work through this entire shutdown. This clearly shows he has been playing politics with these furloughs.

"I am very happy to see that the President has decided to stop using our Department of Defense civilian employees as bargaining chips and allow them to go back to work.

"These men and women are crucial to our country's national defense and I am glad they will be allowed to go back to work this week to support our armed forces."

Turner had been fighting to get these civilian employees back to work. Turner has written to Secretary Hagel and President Obama for clarification on their decision to furlough.

He has also authored and co-authored bills that would close any loophole and force the administration to allow these employees to resume their jobs.
