Thousands turn out for Romney, Wenstrup

PORTSMOUTH – Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney and Second Congressional District candidate Dr. Brad Wenstrup campaigned in southern Ohio Saturday, Oct. 13.
The red, white and blue Romney/Ryan (R/R) logo was prevalent in the blue-collar Scioto County river city of Portsmouth Saturday afternoon.
An estimated 3,500 supporters attended the rally outside Shawnee State University.
Romney touched on energy policies and fair trade during his Scioto County speech.
“Over the past several years the president has failed to call China a currency manipulator," Romney said. "He had the occasion on Friday to come out with that official designation. You know what they said? ‘We’re not going to make any determination until after the election.’
"Let me tell you, on day one of my administration I will label China a currency manipulator.”
"Let me tell you what that means, by the way," Romney added. "When a country artificially holds down the value of their currency, it means that the products that they sell to us are artificially cheap.
"And that means that American companies that are making these similar products, they go out of business if their Chinese products are so much cheaper than the real costs behind them."

No Republican has won the presidency without winning Ohio.
After trailing President Obama in many of the early polls, Romney hasn't given up on Ohio's 18 electoral votes. Ohio voted for Obama four years ago.
Romney has made 34 campaign stops in the Buckeye State.
After the first presidential debate, polls show Obama's early lead of nearly 8 points has been reduced to 2 points.
• Also speaking in Portsmouth Saturday was Second Congressional District candidate Dr. Brad Wenstrup.
Wenstrup, a Republican, faces Pike County Democrat William Smith in the general election.
Wenstrup is a lieutenant colonel with the U.S. Army Reserve, serving in the Medical Service Corps.
In 2005, Wenstrup deployed for a year of active duty in Iraq where he served as a combat surgeon with the 344th Combat Support Hospital. For his service and actions in Iraq, Wenstrup was awarded the Bronze Star and Combat Action Badge.
