Former Ohio Gov. and Congressman Ted Strickland has accepted a teaching position at Harvard University's Institute of Politics.
Strickland, 70, who holds a master of divinity degree from Asbury Theological Seminary and a doctoral degree in counseling psychology from the University of Kentucky, will teach an undergraduate course in class warfare in America.
Strickland, a Scioto County Democrat, was elected to Congress in 1992 when he defeated a Republican incumbent, Hillsboro's Bob McEwen.
Strickland has represented 20 Ohio counties stretching from the Cincinnati suburbs to the suburbs of Youngstown. He lost re-election in 1994 to Republican Frank Cremeans of Gallipolis, but was re-elected in 1996 and to each subsequent Cngress before he ran successfully for governor of Ohio in 2006.
After he was re-elected to Congress in 1996, Strickland placed a plaque in his office with the following quote from Scripture: “And what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” – Micah 6:8.
Strickland was born on Aug. 4, 1941 in Lucasville, one of nine children. He spent his childhood active in church and school life.
According to his website, "His family was able to piece together enough for tuition and, soon after graduating from Northwest High School in McDermott, he found himself attending Asbury College in Kentucky, where he received a B.A. in history in 1963. Ted became the only child in his family to go on to college and has earned two master's degrees and a PhD.
"Professionally, Ted has served as an ordained Methodist minister, a psychologist, and a college professor. He was an administrator at a Methodist children’s home, an assistant professor of psychology at Shawnee State University, and a consulting psychologist at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility (SOCF)."
Strickland was elected Ohio’s 68th governor on Nov. 7, 2006, and was sworn into office on Jan. 8, 2007. He lost a re-election bid to Republican John Kasich in 2010.
Earlier this month, the former governor was in Hillsboro on behalf of city council member Pete Pence, who is challenging Republican incumbent Rep. Cliff Rosenberger for Ohio's 91st House District seat in November.
The campaign kickoff event for Pence was held at the Hillsboro Elks Lodge and included a number of Democrats, Republicans and TEA (Taxed Enough Already) Party members.
"That's wonderful, Pete," Strickland said to his fellow Democrat. "That's what we need: people in public office who can bring people together."
Strickland told the candidate: "You have to work hard. You have to go to the people, look them in the eye and answer their questions.
