SSCC among state's best community colleges in CNNMoney report
Southern State Community College is one of Ohio's top community colleges for transfer and graduation rates, according to a CNNMoney report.
The rankings are “based on the percentage of students that graduated within three years or transferred to four-year colleges,” the article says.
Southern State Community College and Lorain Community College in Elyria were the best in Ohio with 45-percent rates of success.
The highest rated community college in the U.S., based on transfer and graduation rates, is East San Gabriel Valley Regional Occupational Program in California – at 93 percent.
According to CNNMoney, "College Measures, a joint venture of the American Institutes of Research and Matrix Knowledge Group, has created a chart for to help students find the best options. Based on the percentage of students that graduated within three years or transferred to four-year colleges, they compiled a "success" rating for each community college in the U.S.
"To make sure a school did not appear on this list because of a statistical blip, we did not count colleges with less than 200 full-time freshmen."
"Given that so many of our students attend school – on top of maintaining jobs and families – this speaks highly of our students' work ethic, and our faculty's commitment to help our students reach their goals," SSCC President Dr. Kevin Boys said.
"This 'top place' among Ohio's community colleges gives us pause to both celebrate and aim for even higher rates of completion and transfer. Student success and completion will continue to be a strategic priority of the college and the state of Ohio.
"Governor Kasich has charged our group of college and university presidents to redesign the state's higher education funding formula to place more emphasis on degree completion. I am excited to be a part of this critical reform effort," Boys said.
