Report cards reflect well on area schools

One Highland County school district and one individual school were given the highest possible rating by the Ohio Department of Education on its preliminary state test report card, as Fairfield Local Schools and Greenfield Elementary School both earned “excellent with distinction” honors.

The Ohio Department of Education announced the unofficial district, traditional school, community school and STEM school results on Ohio’s 2011-12 state tests on Wednesday, Oct. 17. According to the ODE, these results are not final, and the finalized reports will be published after investigations are complete.

District and school ratings are based on state indicators, performance index, adequate yearly progress (AYP) and value-added measure.

The state indicators are based on state test scores, while the performance index, which can range from 0-120 points, “reflects the achievement of every student enrolled for the full academic year,” as stated by the ODE.

The AYP is determined based on proficiency and participation, attendance rate and graduation rates for 10 student groups. If any individual group does not meet one of the criteria for the AYP category, the school or district will not meet their AYP.

The value-added rating is a measure of the school or district’s progress from the previous year.

The six possible ratings for districts and individual schools, in order of greatest to least, are: Excellent with Distinction, Excellent, Effective, Continuous Improvement, Academic Watch and Academic Emergency.

• The Bright Local School District was issued a “continuous improvement” rating, after being ranked “effective” last year. The district met 18 of 26 state indicators, with a performance index of 92.1. Bright Local did not meet their AYP and were ranked below the value-added growth.

District test scores were: third grade reading Ohio Achievement Assessments (OAA), 74.1; third grade math OAA, 83.3; fourth grade reading OAA, 80; fourth grade math OAA, 78.6; fifth grade reading OAA, 62; fifth grade math OAA, 53.5; fifth grade science OAA, 59.2; sixth grade reading OAA, 90.2; sixth grade math OAA, 64.7; seventh grade reading OAA, 78.6; seventh grade math OAA, 73.2; eighth grade reading OAA, 75.9; eighth grade math OAA, 64.8; eighth grade science OAA, 68.5; 10th grade Ohio Graduation Test (OGT) reading, 91.8; 10th grade OGT writing, 93.9; 10th grade OGT math, 87.8; 10th grade OGT science, 81.6; 10th grade OGT social studies, 87.8; 11th grade OGT reading, 94.2; 11th grade OGT writing, 100; 11th grade OGT math, 98.1; 11th grade OGT science, 88.5; and 11th grade OGT social studies, 92.3. Individual schools within the district ranged from “academic watch” to “excellent.”

• Bright Elementary School met five of 10 state indicators, with a performance index of 88.7. The school has a preliminary rating of “academic watch” and was placed in the “at risk” status.

• Whiteoak High School met 11 of 12 state indicators, for a performance index of 101.3. The school met its AYP and was rated “excellent.”

• Whiteoak Junior High School met three of six state indicators, for a performance index of 90.3.

• The Fairfield Local School District was elevated from an “effective” district in 2010-11 to “excellent with distinction.” The district met 25 of 26 state indicators, with a performance index of 100.9. The Fairfield district met their adequate yearly progress and were above the value-added growth.

Test scores were: third grade reading OAA, 85.1; third grade math OAA, 90.5; fourth grade reading OAA, 85.5; fourth grade math OAA, 82.9; fifth grade reading OAA, 79.7; fifth grade math OAA, 70.3; fifth grade science OAA, 82.4; sixth grade reading OAA, 92.4; sixth grade math OAA, 90.9; seventh grade reading OAA, 86.2; seventh grade math OAA, 83.1; eighth grade reading OAA, 92.8; eighth grade math OAA, 87; eighth grade science OAA, 88.4; 10th grade OGT reading, 92.3; 10th grade OGT writing, 90.8; 10th grade OGT math, 92.3; 10th grade OGT science, 84.6; 10th grade OGT social studies, 87.7; 11th grade OGT reading, 95.8; 11th grade OGT writing, 97.9; 11th grade OGT math, 97.9; 11th grade OGT science, 97.9; and 11th grade OGT social studies, 93.8. Individual schools within the district were all rated “excellent.”

• Fairfield Local Elementary School met five of five state indicators, with a performance index of 101.3. They met their AYP and value-added growth.

• Fairfield Local High School met 12 of 12 state indicators for a performance index of 103.4 and met their AYP.

• Fairfield Local Middle School met 10 of 11 state indicators and earned a performance index of 99.6.

• Greenfield Exempted Village Schools were named “effective,” as they were given the same distinction for the 2010-11 school year. The Greenfield district met 20 of 26 state indicators, with a performance index of 94.4.

The district did not meet their AYP but met their value-added growth. Test scores were: third grade reading OAA, 78; third grade math OAA, 78; fourth grade reading OAA, 84.2; fourth grade math OAA, 84.2; fifth grade reading OAA, 79.3; fifth grade math OAA, 64.7; fifth grade science OAA, 72.8; sixth grade reading OAA, 80.8; sixth grade math OAA, 75.3; seventh grade reading OAA, 74.8; seventh grade math OAA, 63.3; eighth grade reading OAA, 75.5; eighth grade math OAA, 75.5; eighth grade science OAA, 71.8; 10th grade OGT reading, 86.4; 10th grade OGT writing, 79.3; 10th grade OGT math, 77.9; 10th grade OGT science, 75.7; 10th grade OGT social studies, 84.3; 11th grade OGT reading, 94.1; 11th grade OGT writing, 90.8; 11th grade OGT math, 89.9; 11th grade OGT science, 87.4; and 11th grade OGT social studies, 95. Individual schools ranged in ratings of “effective” to “excellent with distinction.”

• Buckskin Elementary School met six of eight state indicators, receiving a performance index of 95. They were rated “excellent.”

• Greenfield Elementary School met five of five state indicators for a performance index of 97.7. They earned an “excellent with distinction” rating.

• Greenfield Middle School met five of eight state indicators with a performance index of 91.9. FMS was rated “effective” with a school improvement status of “improvement year 4 (delay).”

• McClain High School met 11 of 12 state indicators for a performance index of 97.3. MHS did not meet its AYP and was designated “effective” with a status of “improvement year 2 (delay).”

• Rainsboro Elementary School met five of eight state indicators for a performance index of 92. The school met both the AYP and value-added growth and was “effective.”

• Hillsboro City Schools were issued a rating of “excellent,” after being “effective” for the 2010-11 school year. HCS met 18 of 26 state indicators (69.2) percent, with a performance index of 94.5. Test scores were: third grade reading OAA, 83.3; third grade math OAA, 74.1; fourth grade reading OAA, 78.8; fourth grade math OAA, 70.2; fifth grade reading OAA, 76.7; fifth grade math OAA, 67.5; fifth grade science OAA, 69.4; sixth grade reading OAA, 85.5; sixth grade math OAA, 74.4; seventh grade reading OAA, 76.0; seventh grade math OAA, 73.5; eighth grade reading OAA, 78.3; eighth grade math OAA, 82; eighth grade science OAA, 76.1; 10th grade OGT reading, 82.8; 10th grade OGT writing, 81.4; 10th grade OGT math, 77.7; 10th grade OGT science, 77.1; 10th grade OGT social studies, 85.5; 11th grade OGT reading, 92.4; 11th grade OGT writing, 86.5; 11th grade OGT math, 88.8; 11th grade OGT science, 84.6; and 11th grade OGT social studies, 88.8.

• Hillsboro Early Childhood Center met its only state indicator and did not meet its AYP.

• Hillsboro High School met 10 of 12 state indicators with a performance index of 97.4. HHS did not meet its AYP. They were rated “effective.”

• Hillsboro Intermediate School met three of six state indicators for a performance index of 90.7. HIS did not meet the AYP but met the value-added growth. They were rated “effective.”

• Hillsboro Middle School met six of eight state indicators for a performance index of 95. HMS did not meet the AYP but was ranked above the value-added growth. They were rated “excellent” and placed under “at risk” status.

• Hillsboro Primary School met two of three state indicators for a performance index of 96.7. HPS did not meet the AYP. They were rated “effective” and placed under “improvement year 6” status.

• Lynchburg-Clay Local Schools were rated “effective,” after being rated “excellent” for the 2010-11 school year. They met 23 of 26 state indicators (88.5), with a performance index of 99.1. Test scores were: third grade reading OAA, 93.0; third grade math OAA, 88.4; fourth grade reading OAA, 96.9; fourth grade math OAA, 93.8; fifth grade reading OAA, 76.5; fifth grade math OAA, 60.5; fifth grade science OAA, 88.9; sixth grade reading OAA, 97.2; sixth grade math OAA, 86.2; seventh grade reading OAA, 90.9; seventh grade math OAA, 88.9; eighth grade reading OAA, 90.5; eighth grade math OAA, 86.3; eighth grade science OAA, 85.3; 10th grade OGT reading, 87.6; 10th grade OGT writing, 82; 10th grade OGT math, 84.1; 10th grade OGT science, 74.2; 10th grade OGT social studies, 85.4; 11th grade OGT reading, 93.3; 11th grade OGT writing, 92.2; 11th grade OGT math, 90; 11th grade OGT science, 87.8; and 11th grade OGT social studies, 90. • Lynchburg-Clay Elementary met seven of eight state indicators with a performance index of 99.2. They were rated “effective.”

• Lynchburg-Clay High School met 10 of 12 state indicators with a performance index of 96.2. They met their AYP and were rated “effective.”

• Lynchburg-Clay middle school met eight of eight state indicators with a performance index of 100.9. They were rated “excellent.”
