Powell honored with Distinguished Service Award

Retired Hillsboro Fire Chief Jerry Powell was honored by the city of Hillsboro Monday with the Distinguished Service Award for his 28 years of serving the citizens of Highland County.

During his report to the Hillsboro City Council Monday evening, Hillsboro Safety and Service Director Rick Giroux asked Powell to come forward to accept the award.

Powell had submitted his resignation during the May council meeting, and his retirement was effective May 28. He had been a fire chief for 13 years.

Capt. Jeff Martin was appointed as acting fire chief of Hillsboro Fire and Rescue.

Approximately a dozen Hillsboro Firefighters were in attendance Monday, and gave Powell a standing ovation as he accepted the award. City officials also rose to their feet, clapping, as Powell was handed the plaque by Giroux.

"At this time I would recognize Chief Jerry Powell for his service with the city," Giroux said. "I was aware that he did have a retirement party at the fire station, but I thought it was appropriate to formally present him with some recognition."

Giroux said, "Even though we only had the opportunity to work briefly together, for only a period of a few months, I know his heart was in the right place, and he dearly loved this community, and certainly the fire department he served with distinction for so many years. I certainly wish him luck in his retirement."

The award was given "in recognition of 28 years of distinguished and dedicated service to the city of Hillsboro, the Hillsboro fire department, and residents of this community, from 1984 to 2012."

Additionally, Giroux said that the city had ordered "a medal of distinguished merit" but the manufacturer had mistakenly shipped it to Florida.

Powell said, "It has been an honor and a privilege to serve you. Thank you very much."
