One suspect pleads not guilty in online conspiracy case

One of two Ohio suspects charged with conspiracy for allegedly making online threats has pleaded not guilty.

Alexander Waterland, 24, of Loveland and his attorney declined comment after his 15-minute arraignment before U.S. Magistrate Judge Maureen Kelly last week, The Associated Press reported.

As previously reported, Waterland, 24, and Brett Hudson, 26, of Hillsboro, are facing charges in the case.

Investigators said they threatened to release confidential information about students and faculty if University of Pittsburgh did not publicly apologize for failing to protect students from the bomb threats. Officials said charges against them were not directly related to the bomb threats but came as a result of the same probe.

According to the indictment, the men created an "extortionate" YouTube video in April that claimed the university's servers had been hacked, although Pitt officials have said their computers were never breached.

Waterland and Hudson had worked together at a Mason company, the AP said.
