Hillsboro Fire and Rescue is calling a fire in an unoccupied structure in the 100 block of North West Street "suspicious" after crews responded to a report of smoke on Tuesday afternoon.
The Hillsboro Police Department closed the block to traffic just after 2 p.m. Tuesday while Hillsboro Fire and Rescue, assisted by the Lynchburg Joint Fire and Ambulance District, investigated the two-story brick building at 117 North West Street.
Firefighters made entry to the basement area of the building, where they found the origin area, and quickly extinguished the fire.
Hillsboro firefighter Ed Puckett said the cause of the fire was under investigation, but that it was currently considered "suspicious."
