No injuries reported in Greenfield train derailment

A train passing through the village of Greenfield has come off the tracks while traveling across a bridge within the village corporation limits, but no injuries or extensive property damage has been reported. 

Greenfield City Manager Betty Bishop told The Highland County Press Thursday evening that while it is technically a train derailment, the cars are upright and will be removed as soon as it is daylight on Friday. 

"Two cars have come off the tracks within the village of Greenfield," Bishop said. "This is not a typical derailment. The train has come off the tracks and is sitting upright, and is in a safe position until it can be removed (Friday) morning."

Bishop said that she wants Greenfield residents to know that they are working to make sure the area is safe. 

"Railroad officials have assured us that it is much safer to bring in equipment Friday morning to put the cars back on the tracks than to work on it in the dark. There were four cars involved, no one was hurt, and the engine stayed on the tracks. The engine has already been driven away and sent back to its home base." 

Chief Bradley George of the Paint Creek Joint Fire and EMS District said that while his department was made aware of the situation with the railroad, they were not called to the scene.

The cause of the derailment has not yet been determined, and Bishop said they hope to learn that Friday morning.
