A Newman Road man has been charged with the illegal possession of a firearm after an investigation at his 4071 Newman Road residence Sunday.

Highland County Sheriff Ron Ward said Jeremy Brewer, 30, was charged after an initial report of a dog being shot. After investigation, Ward said Brewer admitted to "doing some target shooting."

"We found he had two prior felony convictions and he was charged with possessing a weapon under disability, a felony of the fourth degree," Ward said.

Brewer was arraigned this week in Hillsboro Municipal Court and released. A preliminary hearing is set for Feb. 18 in Municipal Court.
