Mayoral candidates Hastings, Levo highlight Oct. 10 AAUW forum

Hillsboro candidates for mayor Drew Hastings and John Levo have confirmed their participation in the annual AAUW Candidates and Issues Forum.
This year’s forum is scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 10 (Columbus Day) at Southern State Community College’s Central Campus in Hillsboro.
The Hillsboro Area Branch of the AAUW (American Association of University Women), in conjunction with WVNU-FM and The Highland County Press, will present the informational forum from 6-7:30 p.m., with a live broadcast on WVNU Radio.
AAUW Public Policy Officer Rosemary Ryan said that the annual candidates forum is an important institution for Highland County voters.
“Having an informed voting public is essential for a working republic,” Ryan said. “For more than 20 years, the forum has consistently been a reliable source of information about the general election candidates. It gives the voters a chance to hear what the candidates have to say and a chance to send their own questions in and have them answered directly.”
“A well-informed voter is an effective voter,” said WVNU GM Pat Hays. “WVNU is proud to again partner with the AAUW and The Highland County Press to give Highland County’s voters a chance to know these candidates, what they stand for, and what they plan for our future.”
In addition to Hastings and Levo, there will be speakers on State Issue 2 (the proposed repeal of Ohio Senate Bill 5). Penny Dehner will discuss the Paint Valley Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health levy.
The forum (which is not a debate) will be broadcast live on WVNU-FM, 97.5, and will be moderated by Pat Hays, general manager of the station.
The panel will consist of Rory Ryan, publisher of The Highland County Press; Cindi Pearce, former newspaper editor and reporter and currently a full-time freelance writer; and Sue Hillger of the AAUW. Hillsboro Auditor Gary Lewis and the AAUW’s Frances Larkin will be the timekeepers.
The event will begin at 6 p.m. with guest speakers on State Issue 2 and the Paint Valley ADAMH levy. Each mayoral candidate will then be permitted up to two minutes for his opening statement. Each candidate will then be asked a series of questions from the panel, with a two-minute answer time limit per question.
There will be no questions taken from the audience.
