Hillsboro Mayor Drew Hastings proclaimed the second week of May as "Buddy Poppy Week" during a proclamation signing on behalf of Hillsboro VFW Post 9094 Monday morning at the mayor's office.

The annual sale of Buddy Poppies by the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States has been officially recognized and endorsed by the governmental leaders since 1922.

Hastings signed the proclamation Monday, before Hillsboro Post 9094 members Dwight Reynolds and George Steward.

According to the proclamation, "Buddy poppies are assembled by disabled veterans and the proceeds of this worthy fundraising campaign are used exclusively for the benefit of disabled, needy veterans, widows and orphans of deceased veterans. The basic purpose of the annual sale of Buddy Poppies by the Veterans of Foreign Wars is eloquently reflected in the desire to 'Honor the Dead by Helping the living.'"

Area veterans will be at local businesses accepting donations in exchange for the Buddy Poppies during May.

Since 1922, the Buddy Poppy has been an integral part of the VFW community. As VFW’s official memorial flower, the Poppy represents the bloodshed by American service members. It reiterates that VFW will not forget their sacrifices.
