Man arrested for assaulting police officers indicted on charge of first-degree felony assault

A South Salem man who was initially charged with allegedly assaulting three police officers in August has been indicted on a first-degree felony charge of assault with a gun specification.
Justin Stubbs, 32, was arrested Aug. 28 after he allegedly fled from a vehicle, in which he was a passenger, during a traffic stop on Willow Street in Hillsboro. In addition to the three attempted assault charges, Stubbs is facing charges of having weapons under disability, a felony of the third degree; carrying a concealed weapon, a fourth-degree felony; and misdemeanor charges of theft, obstructing official business, aggravated menacing and resisting arrest, according to Hillsboro Municipal Court.
On March 1, a grand jury in Highland County Common Pleas Court returned indictments on the first-degree felony charge of assault with a gun specification; one count of trafficking in crack cocaine, a felony of the fifth degree; and one count of having weapons under disability, a felony of the third degree.
As previously reported by the Highland County Press in August, the Ohio State Highway Patrol made the traffic stop around 3:30 a.m. Aug. 28 and called for assistance from the Hillsboro Police Department. According to the release, the driver of the vehicle said Stubbs was "on the run from the law" and was armed with a handgun. It was believed Stubbs had fled to a residence on Willow Street.
As officers approached the Willow Street residence, two people were noticed near a vehicle in the driveway. When approached, Stubbs fled on foot, according to the HPD. Officers used tasers on Stubbs, to no avail. As officers continued to attempt to apprehend the suspect, Stubbs "reached for his waistband and attempted to remove a 9 mm handgun," the HPD said. After a struggle, officers were able to subdue Stubbs.
According to the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections website, Stubbs is currently incarcerated on an unrelated charge of trafficking in drugs.
