Lynchburg-Clay students attend District Science Fair

On March 17, 11 students from Lynchburg-Clay High School competed in the District 17 Science Day at Wilmington College.

Four students received a superior rating and seven students received an excellent rating.

The four superior projects will advance to the State Science Day on May 5 at the Ohio State University. Those receiving a superior rating were: Ben Jones with “The Effect of a Barrel De-Resonator on the Group Size of a Target Rifle,” Cori Lay with “The Effect of Age on the Amount of Text Messages Sent Daily,” Neil Rowlands with “The Effect of Colored Light on Growing Radishes,” and Jacob Skaggs with “The Effect of Weight on How Far a Trebuchet Will Throw a Projectile.”

Students were sponsored by high school science teachers Lara Hamilton, James O’Connor, and Alicia Shope.

First held in 1949, the 60th annual State Science Day is sponsored by the Ohio Academy of Science, American Electric Power, the Ohio Environmental Education Fund and Boehringer Ingelheim Roxane, Inc. The academic equivalent of a state athletic championship, this year’s event is the largest of its kind in the nation.

State Science Day is the pinnacle of student-originated, inquiry-based science education. At this year’s State Science Day, $2.9 million worth of scholarships and awards will be presented to high achieving students from across the state of Ohio.
