Local businesses donate to HUBA beautification project

With a feel of summer in the air, members of the Hillsboro Uptown Business Association worked on a city beautification project Wednesday, hanging baskets and planting flowers donated by local businesses.

More than $4,200 has been donated to the project, according to HUBA members Alice Wilson and Karen Cundiff, including flowers and supplies, wrought iron hanging baskets, and a water cart.

Wilson and Cundiff, along with Maggie Horst and Lori Gunderman, planted purple flowers in each of the city's planters Wednesday, located along High Street and Main Street.

"It's was so nice out this morning, we didn't see any reason to wait to plant the flowers," Wilson said.

The project has been coordinated with the Highland County Adult Probation Authority so that people doing ordered community service will water the plants every weekday throughout the summer.

HUBA extended their thanks to the following flower sponsors:

 Lesia Langston McKenna , D.M.D.; NCB, Julie Overberg Family Dentistry, S.O.S. Single Office Stop, Classic Real Estate Company, Heskett Insurance, and a "very generous anonymous donor."

 All of the baskets were purchased locally from Cundiff Farm Market, Town and Country Greenhouse and Fayette Wrought Iron.

Wilson said that a banner will be going up later this week thanking the main donors of project. 

HUBA Vice President Brent Huffman said that the flowers were planted just in time for HUBA's monthly First Friday event.

The May 4 event will also include an Art Walk from 5-8 p.m. at participating uptown businesses.
