Jon Marshall recognized for many years of service to legal community

After 22 years as the head of the state attorney discipline board and a distinguished career in law spanning four decades, Columbus attorney Jon Marshall received two awards from the local and state bar associations.
Marshall was honored with the Award of Merit from the Columbus Bar and Columbus Bar Foundation at their annual awards luncheon. On May 4, Marshall will receive the Ohio State Bar Association’s 2011 Eugene R. Weir Award for Ethics and Professionalism at the OSBA’s Annual Convention in Columbus. The Weir Award recognizes exceptional professional responsibility among Ohio lawyers.
“I want to thank the Justices of the Supreme Court, past and present members of the Board and my co-workers for a singular opportunity to serve the profession and help do what I could to keep it honest,” Marshall said.
Since 1989, Marshall has been the secretary of the Ohio Board of Commissioners on Grievances & Discipline. Marshall announced his retirement earlier this year. His last day with the Board of Commissioners on Grievances & Discipline is June 30, but he plans to remain active in teaching ethics, practicing law, and community service.
The board is composed of 28 members, appointed by the Supreme Court. Four are public members, seven are active or retired judges and 17 are lawyers throughout the state. The board issues findings and recommendations to the Court on serious ethical misconduct complaints lodged against Ohio attorneys and judges. The secretary serves as chief legal officer for the board and is responsible for interpreting the Rules of Professional Conduct and the Code of Judicial Conduct.
A former judge, Marshall has been a pillar of the Columbus and Ohio legal communities for many years, starting out as a civil rights lawyer in private practice, championing tenant rights and representing less fortunate Ohioans.
He earned his undergraduate degree from The Ohio State University in 1966 and his law degree from Capital University Law School in 1970.
He practiced law in Columbus with the Columbus Legal Aid Society, Ohio State Legal Services Association and as a partner in the law firm of Spater, Gittes, Marshall & Terzian. He served as Executive Director of the Ohio State Legal Services Association and as Chief Elections Counsel, Ohio Secretary of State. He was appointed and served as judge of Franklin County Court of Common Pleas.
He continues to serve as a member and officer on the Board of Trustees of Ohio State Legal Services Association, and as a member of the Capital University Law School alumni board.
Marshall is a Trainer for Ohio Judicial College; teaching Ohio judges at all levels on responsibilities under the Code of Judicial Conduct; lecturer for the Miller-Becker Institute, and serves as judge for the Ohio Mock trial program sponsored by Ohio Center for Law-Related Education. Marshall is an active member of the Ohio State Bar Association and Columbus Bar Association.
