Two individuals are being sought by the Mowrystown Police Department after they fled the scene of a car crash following a pursuit in southern Highland County that exceeded speeds of 100 mph in an allegedly stolen vehicle.
Mowrystown Police Chief Jay Anderson told the Highland County Press that an officer with his department attempted to make a traffic stop on a pickup truck Tuesday evening inside the village. However, the vehicle did not stop.
"He attempted to make a stop on the vehicle for a violation and turned his lights on," Anderson said. "The vehicle immediately sped up, reaching speeds over 100 mph, and leaving the village. He followed the vehicle for five or six miles into the Buford area. He lost sight of them and dropped the pursuit at that time."
Highland County Sheriff Ron Ward told The Highland County Press that his department was called to assist the MPD.
"They initiated a pursuit, and we were acting as a resource," Ward said. "In the end, the vehicle crashed, and the individuals fled."
Anderson said the HCSO located the vehicle and began pursuit in the area of state Route 73 south.
"The (Ohio State Highway Patrol) set up a road block and that's where the pursuit ended (with the vehicle crashing)," Anderson said.
The two individuals fled the vehicle and they were pursued by law enforcement.
Anderson described the occupants as "two young adult males."
The HCSO assisted with tracking the individuals with the K-9 units; however, "they were not apprehended," Ward said.
Anderson said the initial alleged violation for the traffic stop was for operating and unsafe vehicle.
"The truck had a loud exhaust and had a flashlight strapped to the rear of the truck for a taillight and license plate light," Anderson said.
The owner of the vehicle was contacted and informed police that when she returned home she found that her truck was missing, and she didn't know who had it. Anderson said that she is in the process of filing a stolen vehicle report.
The incident remains under investigation.
