Hillsboro Safety and Service Director Richard Giroux arrested

Hillsboro Safety and Service Director Richard Giroux was arrested on a charge of OVI (operating a vehicle while impaired) late Sunday evening by the Hillsboro Police Department.

Giroux, 51, of Westover Drive, Hillsboro, also was charged with failing to obey a traffic device, according to Hillsboro Municipal Court records.

Giroux was taken to the Highland County Justice Center for incarceration at approximately 1:15 a.m. Monday, Nov. 26.

Hillsboro Police Chief Nick Thompson also confirmed that the safety and service director was arrested. Thompson said Giroux was alone when he was pulled over for running a stop sign.

According to court records, Giroux tested .188 on a DUI Breathalizer test.

Giroux is scheduled for an arraignment in Hillsboro Municipal Court at 8 a.m. on Nov. 29.

Giroux was appointed safety and service director in January 2012 by Hillsboro Mayor Drew Hastings.

Hillsboro Mayor Drew Hastings issued the following statement Monday:

"Over the weekend, Hillsboro Police Department charged Safety Service Director Rick Giroux with DUI. I spoke with Rick, and understandably, he feels very badly about the incident.

"Knowing Rick and his high standards of professionalism, I'm sure he regrets the mistake and any embarrassment to the City. I want to commend the Hillsboro Police Department for not treating Mr. Giroux any differently than anyone else in similar circumstances."

Giroux also has a prior arrest for driving under the influence in Guernsey County, Ohio.
