A Hillsboro man has been charged with assault stemming from an incident at the Grace House in the 300 block of North High Street.

Eric Daugherty, 52, a resident of the shelter, was charged by the Hillsboro Police Department after allegations that he assaulted a 9-year-old girl, who was also living at the shelter with her family.

According to a news release from the HPD, an officer was dispatched on Sept. 14 in reference to a report of an assault.

When the officer arrived at the shelter, he was advised that Daugherty was "heavily intoxicated."

"The officer found Daugherty passed out in his bed with a strong odor of alcoholic beverage about him. While being taken into custody, Daugherty showed strong indicators that he was heavily intoxicated," the report said.

Due to overcrowding at the Highland County Justice Center, Daugherty was transported to the Greenfield jail, the news release stated.

On Sept. 17, Daugherty pleaded guilty to assault in Hillsboro Municipal Court.
