Hillsboro FFA receives Farm to School Grant; will be recognized at Ohio Student Achievement Fair

The Hillsboro FFA Chapter has been recognized and invited to attend the Ohio Student Achievement Fair in November for a new Farm to School Project.

In the spring of 2013, the Hillsboro FFA Chapter applied for a grant called “Farm to School Initiative” promoted by the USDA. The intentions of the program is to provide fresh, locally grown or raised food, while educating students about many aspects of agriculture and the community.

The Hillsboro FFA Chapter was fortunate to be a grant recipient. The Farm to School Grant provided the chapter up to $5,000 for Farm to School related projects and activities.

With grant money, the chapter purchased two different hydroponic systems to use in the school greenhouse. Utilizing the hydroponic kits, the FFA chapter will produce freshly grown lettuce and tomatoes to be used in the school cafeteria.

Students have been involved in the entire process, from assembling the kits, to planting seeds, measuring pH levels, and maintaining nutrient levels.

Students from the Greenhouse Management Class harvest the lettuce and send it to the Healthy and Safe Foods class to clean and take to the school cafeteria.

Hillsboro Agriculture teacher, Mrs. McNeal, states, “The Farm to School Initiative sets up a great opportunity and learning experience for our chapter. Students are able to witness and participate in the whole production process from planting a seed to eating the food. “

On November 12, students from the Greenhouse Management class will attend the Ohio Student Achievement Fair, in Columbus, to present results from the Farm to School Grant project.

The Student Achievement Fair showcases the many innovative projects and programs districts have created to boost student achievement and engage youngsters in learning and growth. The fair offers excellent opportunities to learn about new programs, share ideas and celebrate what public education in Ohio is all about — helping our students achieve.
