Highland Soil and Water Conservation District holds 70th annual meeting

The Highland SWCD celebrated their 70th year as a Soil and Water Conservation District during their Annual Meeting that was held on Oct. 11 at the Hi-TEC Center in Hillsboro.
The Highland County Commissioners presented the Board of Supervisors with a proclamation that named Oct. 11, 2012 Conservation Day in honor of the Highland SWCD being the first district in the state formed on April 29, 1942.
During the meeting, several awards were presented, a successful silent auction was held and the election of supervisors took place.
Don Roberts took home top honors at this year's annual meeting by being named the 2012 Cooperator of the Year by the Highland SWCD supervisors and staff.
Roberts was selected due to his determination and willingness to improve soil and water quality throughout his operation. He has installed and utilized various conservation practices installed throughout his operation over the years.
Roberts has been an instrumental part of conservation in the County and has been a big part in making the Highland Soil and Water Conservation District what it is today.
He served on the Board of Supervisors for 15 years and provides an outstanding example of how to incorporate conservation practices that will protect the natural resources of Highland County.

The election of Supervisors for the Board of the Highland Soil & Water Conservation District was also held during the Annual Meeting. There were two candidates running this year for one position available for a three-year term beginning January 2013.
The candidates on the ballot were Jeff Roehm and Larry Shannon. When the election results were tallied, Larry Shannon was re-elected for another term. Other members of the Highland SWCD Board of Supervisors include Jeff Duncan, Jim Carr, Kyle Mustard and Jeff Boike.
