Highland County's unemployment rate at 12.3 percent

Highland County's unemployment rate fell to 12.3 percent in August, down nearly a full percent from its 13.1-percent rate in July. Highland County currently has the fifth highest jobless rate in the state of Ohio, behind Pike, Meigs, Clinton and Adams counties. 
The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services released the rates Tuesday, which showed seven counties had unemployment rates above 12.0 percent during August. The counties with the highest rates, other than Pike, were: Meigs, 13.7; Clinton, 12.8; Adams, 12.5; and Highland, Morgan, and Scioto, 12.3 percent.
In other area counties, Brown's rate was at 10.4 percent, Ross County at 9.9 percent, Fayette County at 9.1 percent. 
Ohio's unemployment rate was 9.1 percent in August, up slightly from 9.0 percent in July, according to data released last week from the ODJFS. Ohio's nonfarm wage and salary employment decreased 700 over the month, from the revised 5,117,200 in July to 5,116,500 in August.
Among the state's 88 counties, the August 2011 unemployment rates ranged from a low of 5.8 percent in Mercer County to a high of 15.1 percent in Pike County. Rates decreased in all of the 88 counties. In August, the comparable rate for Ohio was 8.8 percent. Five counties had unemployment rates below 7.0 percent in August. The counties with the lowest rates, other than Mercer, were: Geauga and Holmes, 6.2; Delaware, 6.3; and Medina, 6.6 percent.
