Highland County has been placed on a tornado watch, according to the National Weather Service.

The watch was put into effect at 1:55 p.m. Wednesday and will be in effect until 9 p.m. Highland County is also under a hazardous weather outlook alert. Repeated thunderstorms occurring also create the potential for flooding, according to the NWS website.

"Thunderstorms will develop (Wednesday) and tonight in the southerly flow ahead of intensifying low pressure," according the NWS. "Some of the thunderstorms will be severe with large hail, damaging winds and isolated tornadoes. Due to the repeated periods of thunderstorms occurring this week there is also a potential for flooding."

A severe thunderstorm moved through the area Monday evening, with winds downing trees and power lines, and leaving many residents and businesses without power for hours.

In the forecast for Wednesday evening, the chance of precipitation is 100 percent. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible. Showers and thunderstorms are expected Thursday with a high near 77 degrees. Breezy, with a south wind between 11 and 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80 percent.
