Greenfield street evacuated during standoff involving police, gunman

On Saturday, Dec. 8 at 2:11 p.m., Greenfield police officers responded to a residence on Waddell Street in Greenfield, on a report of an armed suicidal male.
The subject, Sherrod Compher, 42, was apparently in distress over a domestic situation. Officers attempted to make contact with Compher and heard a shot fired from inside the residence. Officers took cover and were then able to contact him by phone. Compher refused to exit the residence and repeatedly told officers he would make them shoot him or he would shoot himself.
Officers were able to confirm that no one else was inside the home with Compher, and a police negotiator was called to the scene. Nearby homes were evacuated, and the area was contained by officers and the Hillsboro/Greenfield Joint S.R.T. team.

After three hours of negotiations, Compher exited the front door of the home and walked out into the street with a shotgun. While in the street, Compher was distracted by officers, and another officer was able to move from behind cover and stun Compher with a taser.
Compher fell to the ground, and his shotgun discharged into the air. Officers tackled Compher and took him into custody. Compher hit his head on the pavement when he fell, and he was transported to Adena Greenfield Medical Center by Paint Creek Joint EMS/Fire for treatment.
No officers or other civilians were injured during the incident.
After Compher is evaluated by mental health personnel, he will be taken to the Greenfield City jail, and charges will be determined at a later time.
