Grace House Transitional Housing on 333 N. High St. in Hillsboro has a fundraiser called FIST Support. FIST stands for Faithful In Small Things. FIST suggests strength, might, or power. With three "peas" in a pod in the FIST, support can be given to defray the expense of opening Grace House last December. The three "peas" stand for: Pray for the residents, Praise for this kind of housing, and Pledge a small amount monthly.
To become a member of FIST Support, call Valeta Doorneweerd (Director) at 393-5099. Valeta would like to have at least 100 people giving $5.00 a month and at least 50 people giving $10.00 a month.
Before the Homeless Shelter was built, Valeta and others saw a need for transitional housing. Then on Nov. 18, 2008, Valeta got a phone call from a woman who said she had a house for sale and she wanted it used for charitable purposes. Valeta was interested and impressed. She said, "A red flag went up and I asked myself, "how can I buy a house?'" She couldn't think of a way to buy the house. Valeta said, "Another red flag went up and I asked about renting the house." The woman let Valeta rent the house.
After Grace House opened, there was a lot of support. Many people brought furniture and other items, painted it, and fixed it up. However, on Christmas morning, the steam furnace boiler burst and the furnace cost $5,000. Valeta still needs to pay the bank loans. Please consider joining with your FIST Support.
