Former local attorney found guilty of theft

   A former Highland County attorney has been found guilty of two counts of aggravated theft in Montgomery County Common Pleas Court.

   In a case filed Jan. 26, defendant John W. Slagle was found guilty on

two separate counts. “The court finds that between the dates of Feb. 1, 1999 and Dec. 31, 2001, Slagle, in Montgomery County, with purpose to deprive the owner, to wit: the law firm of Pickrel, Schaeffer, and Ebeling, of property or services did knowingly and beyond the scope of the express or implied consent of the owner or person authorized to give consent, obtain or exert control over the property or services of the owner. The property was United States currency having a value of more than $100,000, but less than $500,000. Therefore, the court finds Slagle guilty of the offense of aggravated theft, a felony of the third degree.

   “In count II of the indictment, the court finds that the state has proven beyond a reasonable doubt all the elements of the offense of

aggravated theft. Specifically, this court finds that between the dates of Feb. 1, 1999 and Dec. 31, 2001, the defendant did knowingly and by deception, obtain or exert control over the property or services of the

owner.”

   According to a Montgomery County Clerk of Courts spokesperson, sentencing is set for Feb. 2.
