Firefighters called to Bigelow Street house fire early Tuesday

Hillsboro Fire and Rescue was called to a house fire in the east end of Bigelow Street early Tuesday morning.

At approximately 5:37 a.m., firefighters and Hillsboro police were dispatched to the south side of town for a working structure fire.

A 15-year-old Hillsboro High School freshman died in the fire.

Additional firefighters and EMTs from Paint Creek Joint EMS/Fire District, Lynchburg and Marshall also responded, as did the Highland County Sheriff's Office.

The house appears to be a total loss.

Firefighters and police remained on the scene after 7:30 a.m.

The state fire marshal's office also was called to investigate.
