Firefighters called to Berrysville house fire
Several area fire departments responded to a house fire in Washington Township before sunrise Thursday, Dec. 26.
At approximately 7:15 a.m., firefighters received a call of a structure fire at 3925 state Route 73, just southeast of Berrysville.
Upon arrival, firefighters found a working structure fire. Heavy smoke was billowing from windows and flames were showing from a front-room window.
The fire was reported contained at 8:05 a.m., with firefighters remaining on the scene.
The house sustained heavy damages.
Among the departments responding were: Paint Creek Joint EMS/Fire District, Southern Highland Joint Fire District, Marshall and Lynchburg.
According to Paint Creek Joint EMS and Fire District Chief Bradley George, the homeowner suffered a minor burn to his hand, which was treated on scene. Several pets were lost in the fire.
George said that the fire, which started in the kitchen, is not believed to be suspicious, and that the cause may be an electrical issue.
George said that the family's smoke detector helped alert them and is a reminder to keep a smoke detector with batteries in the home.
"They had a working smoke detector that woke them up this morning," George said.
