Fire department called to Catholic church

Crews from Hillsboro Fire and Rescue responded to St. Mary Catholic Church at approximately 3:35 p.m. Thursday to investigate a reported smell of smoke.
According to personnel on scene, church officials had smelled "something like hot wires" and the fire department was called in to do a safety check.
Student's at St. Mary Catholic School had just been dismissed for the day when crews arrived on scene.
According to Jeff Bain, of HFR, the smell was coming from a candle that had burned down and melted some plastic.
"Upon investigation, we finally found a candle in the back of the sanctuary. It was a floating candle in the back of the altar that had melted the plastic down to the water," Bain said.
The candle was extinguished, and no damage was sustained to the church.
Traffic was not impeded, but it was slowed for a time with fire trucks parked on south High Street.
