Field fire engulfs nearly 40 bales of hay

The Paint Creek Joint EMS and Fire District responded to a field fire that engulfed nearly 40 bales of hay off Wilson Road in Madison Township Tuesday afternoon.

District Assistant Chief Chad Hamilton said they received the call around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday after a person mowing in the area smelled smoke and later saw flames.

"(The fire) looked small, but as we got back there, there were 37 round bales of hay that were on fire," Hamilton said. "We were able to save 24."

The only property damage sustained was to the hay.

"The fire was contained to the bales," Hamilton said.

Paint Creek had approximately 10 people on scene for nearly six hours. They returned to the station just before 7:30 p.m.

The North Joint Fire and EMS District in Leesburg responded to mutual aid with a tanker and three crew members.

Just after 9 p.m., fire crews responded back to the scene to a reported rekindling of the field fire.

Hamilton said that while the cause of the fire is not immediately known, the fire is not considered to be suspicious.

No injuries were reported.
