Distracted driver simulator visiting Highland County Fair

The Ohio Department of Transportation – District 9 will be presenting the Distracted Driver Simulator at the Highland County Fair, beginning Monday, Sept. 3, and continuing through Saturday, Sept. 8.
Touring throughout the state, the Distracted Driver Simulator is part of ODOT’s comprehensive roadway safety campaign, Every Move You Make, Keep It Safe which provides Ohioans with information on how to use the roads safely – whether they get around on foot, by vehicle, motorcycle or bicycle.
“Accidents occur every day because motorists allow their attention to be diverted from the road, and as a result distracted driving has become an epidemic on America’s roadways,” said ODOT District 9 Deputy Director Vaughn Wilson. “The Distracted Driver Simulator challenges the participant to navigate city streets and highways while talking on the phone, sending a text message and listening to passenger conversations.”

The public is encouraged to come test the Distracted Driver Simulator between noon and 8 p.m. next week at the Highland County Fair, where it will be featured in ODOT’s booth in the Exhibition Hall. Equipped with a steering wheel, turn indicators, gas and brake pedals, the simulator features a computer-generated simulation of texting while driving to illustrate the real dangers and possible consequences of distracted driving.
Safety is ODOT’s number one priority. Ohio’s goal is to reduce roadway fatalities five percent by 2015 – saving 150 lives. Many of today’s crashes could be prevented through increased safety awareness and safer driving practices, and the Distracted Driver Simulator is one device that helps teach and promote both.
Tips on how to avoid distractions and encourage others to take the pledge are offered online by visiting www.distraction.gov, and more information on general roadway safety is also available at www.everymove.ohio.gov.
