A crew that will get a derailed train in the village of Greenfield back on track will not be able to make it to Highland County until Monday. However, Greenfield City Manager Betty Bishop said they have been assured the cars are in a safe position to make it through the weekend.

Bishop has asked that area residents stay away from the Greenfield bridge where two cars remain off the tracks, but upright, following an incident Thursday.

It has not yet been determined what caused the train to derail, Bishop said, but crews will look into it when they clear the cars on Monday.

"I don't think the people would even notice that something is wrong unless they got up very close, and they would have to get on the bridge to see that," Bishop said. "We ask that residents just stay away from it and leave it alone."

No injuries were reported in connection with the incident. Chief Bradley George of the Paint Creek Joint Fire and EMS said that his department was made aware of the derailment but was not called to the scene.

"No one was hurt. No one is in any danger now. I have been told that it is as safe as it could be to leave it over the weekend," Bishop said.

The crews initially told Bishop they would begin to remove the cars on Friday morning, as it would be dangerous to remove the cars during the dark. However, the crew that needs to remove the cars is out of state on another project, Bishop said.
