Death toll in Connecticut shooting reportedly at 28

Twenty-eight individuals are reportedly dead after a mass shooting in Connecticut.

At approximately 9:30 a.m. Friday, a gunman opened fire inside Sandy Hook Elementary, a K-4 school in Newtown, Conn.

In a Friday afternoon press conference, Connecticut Governor Dannel P. Malloy reported that 18 children died at the scene of the shooting, while another two later died at an area hospital. Six adults were killed, along with the gunman, who reportedly died of a self-inflicted gunshot woudnd. At least one other individual is injured.

A body was also found at the home of the shooter's mother. CNN reports that the shooter's brother was found dead in Hoboken, N.J. Additionally, the Associated Press is reporting that the shooter's girlfriend and a friend are both apparently missing.

According to NBC Connecticut, "The alleged shooter went into the school, where his mother is a kindergarten teacher, fired shots in the front office and then to the kindergarten class, where he opened fire."

There have been reports of a second shooter. The Associated Press reports that an individual is being held for questioning.

"These children are our children, and we're going to have to come together to take meaningful action," President Barack Obama stated during a Friday afternoon press conference.

"Our hearts are broken today."

The shooting is being investigated, and new reports are being released frequently.

President Obama issued a proclamation directing "U.S. flags (and all subordinate flags) to be flown at half-staff, as a mark of respect for the victims of the senseless acts of violence perpetrated on December 14, 2012, in Newtown, Connecticut."   [[In-content Ad]]
