The unemployment rate for Highland County rose slightly for the month of December, but is down nearly four percent from this time last year.
According to a report released Tuesday by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, Highland County's jobless rate was 10.8 percent for the month of December. That places Highland County with the 11th highest unemployment rate in the state.
Rates increased in 51 of the 88 counties, according to the report. In November, Highland County's rate was 10.5 percent in November, and 11.7 percent the month before. This time last year it was approximately 14 percent.
Pike County, once again, topped the list with the highest rate, at 14.3 percent. Pike was followed by Ottawa County at 13.3 percent, and Adams County at 12 percent.
In other surrounding counties, Clinton County was ranked with the seventh highest, at 11.1 percent. Brown County had 10.8 percent, along with Highland County. Ross County's was 8.9 percent, and Fayette's was 7.7 percent.
Five counties had unemployment rates below 6 percent in December. The counties with the lowest rates included Mercer County at 4.9 percent: Holmes, 5.1; Delaware, 5.3; Geauga 5.8; and Medina, 5.9 percent.
